From Struggle to Success: A New Beginning Through Education

Born in Somalia, Fatumo Hussein's early years were marked by the harsh realities of war. "After my dad died in the war of 1992, my family moved to a refugee camp in Kenya and lived there for 24 years," she said.

In 2015, Fatumo became a Utah resident, setting the stage for a new chapter in her life. Mother to three daughters, she is currently a student at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) and attends school due to a private scholarship.

How a Simple Scholarship Transformed an Immigrant’s Future

Ochoa could get financial assistance to seek her master’s degree in elementary education after an evaluation of her Cuban education.

“Often credentials from communist countries are not accepted. GCU does an excellent job of evaluating transcripts," said Dudek, and helps pay for student costs from evaluation agencies.

Dreamers Scholarship Helps Student Complete Her Degree

Alejandra Cabrera loved working with computers as a child, which is why she pursued a degree in information systems at CU Denver. Today, the ’23 alum is a systems engineer for a large financial company in Denver.

But it almost didn’t happen.

“There was a moment when I realized my last semester was going to cost me a lot more than I expected,” said Cabrera, who had been working full-time in IT support, while going to school part-time. “But thanks to TheDreamers scholarship I was able to finish and graduate in December. Now, I have an amazing job that I love.”
